Sport psychology is much more important than physical training

For ordinary people, sport is fairly good means to be excited and healthy. However, for athletes, they also can be excited and healthy by playing sports, but their another aim is to win the game. Winning brings satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment for ordinary people, but professional athletes earn money, and honor. Therefore sport has more crucial significance to athletes.
For winning the game, athletes need performance skills and fitness like physical abilities. It is a matter of course for them to have. That is why athletes exercise and build up their bodies. However, there is another requirement to win the match. It is psychology.
Recently, athletes and coaches are interested in sport psychology, for example, there are special psychological expert teams in sports powerhouses such as Europe or North America. The special teams deal with psychological problems professionally. They check out athletes' mental states and teach them how to control the mentality, consulting them(Chung chung hee, 2006). Anyway the frequency of utilization and awareness of sport psychology are getting higher.
Sport psychology is a study which finds out the reason why athlete can not show real ability in the real game and why this situation sometimes occurs. Also this study researches how to minimize the adverse or bad effects of psychology and sports psychologists produce programs according to the research result and adapt to the field(Kim byeung jun, 2002). The most important thing psychologists research is to develop the psychological skills and its programs(Chung chung hee, 2006). In sports psychology, there have been many researches which suggest the relationship between mental state and athletic performance. In competitive sports, athletes' mental state has much to do with athletic performance and this mental state is not limited by psychology, but a kind of technique like exercise and it is called psychological skill.
I argue that sport psychology is much more important than physical training. A fitness and strength are indispensable factors in playing sports, so is psychology.

To achieve a goal and get honor in the sport, it is necessary to have physical fitness. However, it is not all the thing needed because there have already been many professional athletes who are physically fit. Then, if you don't have psychological fitness, meaning stable mind, it is hard to accomplish what you want among competitive athletes. This is because psychology contributes to determining the result of the match, for example, confidence, stability, and affirmation.
Psychological skill is a strategy or technique which helps to maximize athletic performance and overcome the stress which comes from competitive circumstances by consideration and mental control. Thus, psychological skill training means the training process which helps athletes to show the best performance and acquire the self-regulation skill(Chung chung hee, Kim byeong joon, 1999).
Psychological skill training is effective to increase performance ability and pleasure, and is an educational program to learn psychological skill. These training is necessary to athlete who not only has mental 'problem', but is mentally stable. and plays a role as an aider which helps players to show their best performance in badly competitive matches(Chung chung hee, 2003).
There are five fields in sport psychology. According to Chung chung hee, a professor in a department of Physical Education, Seoul National University, there are goal setting, concentration training, imagery training and self-confidence training in sport psychology.
First of all, goal setting. Goal setting means making deciding a goal with a specific period. For instance, golfer has a goal to hit seven under or make a birdie for every hole. These goal motivates athletes and leads them to try hard to achieve it(Chung chung hee, 2006). If athletes try hard to achieve their goals, they can benefit like these. They can concentrate on their own work, and make persistent efforts. Also, goal setting helps them to cultivate patience while experiencing failure and slump, and to learn new strategy to attain the goal. Moreover, it makes players have self-confidence and increases their concentration, and also contributes to improve performance ability.
Second, concentration training. It is a skill to maintain one's own concentration on the object for certain period. Strong concentration requires lots of psychological energies, so it is necessary to have strong mind when improving concentration skill. Concentration training prevents athletes from distracted environment, gives them confidence and maximizes the consistency of their performance.
Third, imagery training. An imagery means a technique which creates new experience without direct exercise or with experience. That is to say, it means drawing a state of exercise performance. The imagery includes real things that we feel and see directly and experience that we sense. The characteristic of imagery is internalization(re-categorizing events and making it mine), and experiencing performance sense and manipulating reality into imaginary thing(Martens, 1987). The effects of imagery training are that we can go through the motional sense without moving and improve performance ability with spending spare time. Also, it helps foster positiveness and confidence, and is practical to be used as a method to maintain one's achievement power and make good a deficiency(Kirschenbaum, et al. 1982).
Lastly, self-confidence training. In this case, self-confidence is defined as a belief that 'I' can do and achieve the goal. For instance, a golfer who believes that he or she can do 4m putting has a confidence. A level of confidence and performance is similar to a relation between arousal level and performance. Also, low confidence restricts a motivation to goal and can not awaken athletes(Park dong jin,1994). Therefore it is required to train athletes to instill confidence with these advices. First, performing with confidence even in practice. Second, thinking positively. Third, controlling physical condition. Fourth, learning how to improve confidence. Fifth, Doing positive actions. Last, using appropriate mind(Chung chung hee, 2006).

There are many examples that famous athletes assert that psychological skill is important in sports and its effects are amazing. You can see the significance of sport psychology with the examples, Yuna Kim, Seung Hoon Lee and so on.
Yuna Kim who retired from the figure skating after Sochi Olympic 2014 is called a woman who has the strongest mental among sport experts, because she concentrated on her play and had a composure in suspenseful game. She could have the strongest mental and self-confidence with psychological therapy and counseling. Accordingly, sport psychology is being reviewed. It is a good example that NEST Foundation(NExt generation Sports Talent) founded 'training course of sports mental coach'. Doctor Kim byeong hyun, who has studied sport psychology for thirty years and belongs to KISS(Korea Institute of Sport Science), advised that it is effective for sport teams to have professional psychological coaches.
There is another example. Seung-hoon Lee, who is a speed skater, said 'I was recommended to have psychological therapy, but it was not that popular in Korea. If athletes can have an aid from sport psychology, it may have good influence on their performance ability', during an interview with Cheol won Lee who belongs to NEST Foundation. It means even current athletes realizes that the impact of sport psychology is excellent.
Let me give you more examples, swimmer, Tae hawn Park. To take part in World Championships for Swimming in Rome 2009, he accompanied a psychologist who has helped them in Beijing Olympic 2008 to be mentally stable.
There is an example in the field of soccer, too. Senol Gunes, who is a football manager, scouted a sport psychologist when he belonged to FC Seoul. This is because he was nervous how well Korean athletes understand him and athletes were too young, so that he was mentally anxious. Later, Gunes showed the success of sport psychology, leading semifinal winning in K league, 2009.
According to these examples, I can strongly argue that sport psychology is necessary. I already mentioned the five sources of sport psychology; goal setting, concentration training, imagery training and self-confidence training. To confirm the effectiveness of those, I will state those one more.
First, goal setting is to set a goal with motivation. It motivates athletes to perform well and have confidence. Second, concentration training. To pay attention to the game, strong mind is necessary rather than physical ability. This training prevents them from obstacles and gives them consistency of performance ability. Third, imagery training draws ideal performance and makes athletes try hard to achieve it so that it fosters positiveness and confidence. Last, self-confidence training is similar to goal setting because it stimulates athletes to have confidence to accomplish a goal.
Athletes want to perform well their skills in a game because any athletes who are at peak performance can have high possibility to win. Unfortunately, most players can not display their ability due to anxiety, decreased concentration, lose of confidence and unstable mind(Kim byeong hyun,2007). That is to say, even though their physical ability and skills are at peak, they get the result according to their psychological skills. And it also means that psychological skill is more important than physical skill.
Someone can refute that athletes develop body above all, and it is ambiguous to decide an order of priority between psychology and physical one. Also, they can argue that psychology is one thing and physical ability is another. However, these refutations are not always correct.
First of all, it is not obvious what is more overriding, physical one or psychology. However it is a matter of course for athlete to develop body and nowadays, all the athletes work hard and build up their body. No one gives up to do so because that is fundamental to be an athlete. What I want to argue is that psychology gives benefits and determines the result of match. It has a mutal relation with physical training. It is proved by an essay written by Chung chung hee. Thus it is meaningless to choose the priority.
Second, the opinion that psychology and physical ability are another matters is absurd. According to Chung chung hee, psychological treatment helps athletes to develop confidence and display their performance well in the real game. Therefore those kinds of refutation are illogical and I strongly argue that sport psychology is much more important than physical training.
Most sport experts and psychologist emphasize that the significance of sport psychology is getting stronger and more athletes have psychological therapy now. They also say that psychology is important to have greater result in a game. Even a speed skater Seung-Hoon Lee was recommended to have a treatment.
Sport psychology has various fields and I suggested some field in narration. There are goal setting, concentration training, imagery training and self-confidence training. Goal setting stimulates athletes and cultivates patience. Concentration training improves concentration on game, requiring psychological energies. Imagery training develops positive property and achievement power, and self-confidence training develops the confidence as the name hints.
Recently, there are too many athletes who are physically fit so it is too competitive in the real match. Moreover, physical ability is not everything. Then stable psychological state is necessary to attain honor and goals. It is achieved by psychological therapy. Therefore it is crucial to argue that psychology is much more important than physical ability which belongs to every athlete.

The narration

To achieve a goal and get honor in sport, it is necessary to have physical fitness. However, it is not all the thing needed because there are already many professional athletes who are physically fit. Then, if you don't have psychological fitness, meaning stable mind, it is hard to accomplish what you want among competitive athletes. This is because psychology contributes to determine the result of match, for example, confidence, stability, affirmation and so on.
All around the world, athletes and coaches are interested in sport psychology, especially there is a special psychological expert team in sports powerhouse such as Europe or North America. The confirmation

There are many examples that famous athletes assert that psychological skill is important in sports and its effects are amazing. You can see the significance of sport psychology with the examples, Yuna Kim, Seung Hoon Lee and so on.
Yuna Kim who retired from the figure skating after Sochi Olympic 2014 is called a woman who has the strongest mental among sport experts, because she concentrated on her play and had composure in suspensful game. The refutation and concession

Someone can refute that athletes develop body above all, and it is ambiguous to decide an order of priority between psychology and physical one. Also, they can argue that psychology is one thing and physical ability is another. However, these refutation are not always correct.

For instance, physically fitted person regards psychology as important and psychologically fitted person regards physical one as important. That is, I concede that it differs from person to person.
Third, the opinion that psychology and physical ability are another matters is absurb. According to Chung chung hee, psychological treatment helps athletes to develop confidence and display their performance well in real game.
Therefore those kinds of refutation are illogical and I strongly argue that sport psychology is much more important than physical training.

The conclusion

Most sport experts and psychologist emphasize the significance of sport psychology is getting stronger and more athletes have psychological therapy. They also say that psychology is important to have greater result in a game. Even a speed skater Seung hoon Lee was recommended to have a treatment.
Sport psychology has various field but I suggest some filed in narration. There is goal setting, concentration training, imagery training and self-confidence training. Goal setting stimulates athletes and cultivates patience. Concentration training improves concentraion on game, requiring psychological energy. Imagery training develops positivity and achivement power and self-confidence training develops confidence as the name hints.
Recently, there are too many athletes who are physically fit so it is too competitive in real match. Moreover physical ability isn't everything. Then stable psychological state is necessary to attain honor and goals. It is achieved by psychological therapy. Therefore it is cruical to argue that psycholgy is much more important than physical ability which belongs to every athlete.

Therefore it is cruical to argue that psycholgy is much more important than physical ability which belongs to every athlete.

Refutation and Concession

1. What is my thesis?
Sport psychology is much more important than physical training.

2. What is the opposite position?
Physical ability is the first priority to be an athlete.

3. What arguments can I anticipate?
a) physical training(athletes develop body)
b) order of priority between psychology and physical one.
c) psychology is one thing and physical ability is another. (심리와 피지컬은 별개다)

4. How will I counter those arguments?
a) a matter of course to develop body as an athlete
b) psychology reinforces physical ability
c) stable mind and confidence are influential and it is proved by essays.

My Refutation and Concession

Someone can refute that athletes develop body above all, and it is ambiguous to decide an order of priority between psychology and physical one. Also, they can argue that psychology is one thing and physical ability is another. However, these refutation are not always correct.
First of all, it is a matter of course for athlete to develop body. Nowadays, all the athletes work hard and build up their body. No one gives up to do so because that is fundamental to be an athletes. What I want to argue is that psychology gives benefits and determine the result of match. It is proved by an essay written by Chung chung hee.
Second, people can say ambiguity of an order of priority between psychology and physical ability. It seems plausible. But I want to argue that it varies from person to person.

The Confirmation

1. What is my thesis?
Sport psychology is much more important than physical training.

 2. What types of source am I using to defend my thesis?
I quote essaies of experts and researchers and articles of journalist who is specialized in sports.

3. Are my arguments mostly based on evidence, logic or emotion?
I have some evidences that support the importance of sport psychology, but I can not sure that psychology is more important than physical condition. It is a  weakness of my essay. However, I argue that the importance of it is getting stronger and it will surpass the necessity of physical condition.

My Confirmation

There are many examples that famous athletes assert that psychological skill is important in sports and its effects are amazing. You can see the significance of sport psychology with the examples, Yuna Kim, Seung Hoon Lee and so on.
Yuna Kim who retired from the figure skating after Sochi Olympic 2014 is called a woman who has the strongest mental among sport experts, because she concentrated on her play and had composure in suspensful game. She could have the strongest mental and self-confidence with psychological therapy and counseling. Accordingly, sport psychology is being reviewed. It is a good example that NEST Foundation(NExt generation Sports Talent) founded 'training course of sports mental coach'. Doctor Kim byeong hyun, who has studied sport psychology for thirty years and belongs to KISS(Korea Institute of Sport Science), advised that it is effective for sport teams to have professional psychological coaches(Park sung hyun).
There is another example. Seung hoon Lee who is a speed skater said 'I was recommended to have psychological therapy, but it is not that popular in Korea.
There is an example in field of soccer, too. Senol Gunes who is a football manager scouted a sport psychologist when he belonged to FC Seoul.
To pay attention to game, strong mind is necessary rather than physical ability. This training prevents them from obstacles and give them consistency of performance ability. Third, imagery training draws ideal performance and makes athletes try hard to achieve it so that it fosters positivity and confidence. Last, self-confidence training is similar to goal setting because it stimulates athletes to have confidence to accomplish a goal.
Athletes want to perform well their skills in a game because any athletes who is at peak performance can have high possibility to win. Unfortunately, most players can not display their ability due to anxiety, decreased concentration, lose of confidence and unstable mind(Kim byeong hyun). That is to say, even though athletes ' physical ability and skills are at peak, they get the result according to their psychological skills. And it also means that psychological skill is more important than physical skill.

Sport psychology is much more important than physical training

What I hope to learn from this source:
I am going to use information about relationship between psychological counselling and performance ability. It will assure me that sport psychology is important.

Notes:

(There are few reports and news in English that highlight the importance of sport psychology and effects. I found some Korean articles and reports and I will use it here. However, I will write an essay in English. Don't worry.)

1. When thinking why psychology is necessary in sports, it is influential to performance ability. Moreover it is related to daily life of athletes, so that it is inextricable to them.

2. Players who have problems need counselling and prescribe, players who don't have problems need to train for their stable mind.

3. Psychological training is conducted when athletes have not only mental problem but have anxiety about improving performance ability. Everyone can have psychological therapy but in Korea, they don't know where to train even though they want to do, and it is the problem.

Final Thoughts:
I learn that psychological training is related to daily life. In Korea, unlike foreign countries, it is unfamiliar to have psychological therapy. I need to argue that generalization of sport psychology is important and should be in urgent.

The Narration

My persuasive argument thesis is:
Sport psychology is much more important than physical training.

1. What do people already know about my topic?
Everyone knows that physically fit athlete is likely to good at sports such as football, basketball and so on. Everyone agrees with the fact, physical ability is important to play sports and makes athlete hold a dominant position.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?
1) http://www.sportnest.kr/1289 What is sport psychology? - I got an example that a professional athlete emphasizes the importance of sport psychology, and what sport psychologists study.
2) http://www.sportsq.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=2556 There is sport psychology behind the best mental state like Kim Yuna - I learned the five fields in sport psychology and which factors influence on it.

3. What are the implications of my argument (What if I'm right? What if I'm right and people ignore me?)
If my argument is right, people especially the government or sport organisation must produce sport psychology treatment more and support financial aids. Otherwise, athletes will have complaints and it will be limited to improve their performance skills.

My Narration

To achieve a goal and get honor in sport, it is necessary to have physical fitness. However, it is not all the thing needed because there are already many professional athletes who are physically fit. Then, if you don't have psychological fitness, meaning stable mind, it is hard to accomplish what you want among competitive athletes. This is because psychology contributes to determine the result of match, for example, confidence, stability, affirmation and so on.
All around the world, athletes and coaches are interested in sport psychology, especially there is a special psychological expert team in sports powerhouse such as Europe or North America. The special team deal with psychological problem professionally. They check out athletes' mental states and teach them how to control the mentality, consulting them(Chung chung hee, 2006).  In sports psychology, there has been many researches which suggest the relationship between mental state and athletic performance. In competitive sports, athletes' mental state has much to do with athletic performance and these mental state is not limited by psychology, but a kind of technique like exercise technique and it is called psychological skill.
Psychological skill is 'a strategy or technique which helps to maximize athletic performance and overcome the stress which comes from competitive circumstances by consideration and mental control.' Thus, psychological skill training means the training process which helps athletes to show the best performance and acquire the self-regulation skill(Chung chung hee, Kim byeong joon, 1999).
Ultimately, psychological skill training is effective to increase performance ability and pleasure, and is educational program to learn psychological skill. These training is necessary to athlete who not only has mental 'problem', but is mentally stable. and plays a role as an aider which helps players to show their best performance in badly competitive matches(정청희 Chung chung hee, 2003).
To start with, let me know you some kinds of sports psychology to help you to understand the subject matter. According to Chung chung hee, a professor in department of Physical Education, Seoul National University, there are goal setting, concentration training, imagery training and self-confidence training in sport psychology.
First of all, goal setting. Goal setting means making deciding a goal with specific period. Moreover, it makes players to have self-confidence and increases their concentration, and also contributes to improve performance ability.
Second, concentration training. It is a skill to maintain one's own concentration on the object for certain period. Strong concentration requires lots of psychological energy, so it is necessary to have strong mind when improving concentration skill.
Concentration training prevents athletes from distracted environment, gives them confidence and maximizes the consistency of their performance.
Third, imagery training. An imagery means a technique which creates new experience without direct exercise or with past experience. The effects of imagery training is that we can go through the motional sense without moving and improve performance ability with spending spare time. Also, it helps foster positivity and confidence, and is practical to be used as an method to maintain one's achievement power and make good a deficiency(Kirschenbaum, et al.

Articulation

It is too late to upload 'Articulation' Sorry

1) My argument

Sport psychology is much more important than physical training

2) How I found my argument
Usually I enjoy any kinds of sports and after learning psychology in english class, I tried hard to connect psychology, meaning human mind to sports. However, I've already known that there is a field of sport psychology but from that moment, I wanted to research about sport psychology and its effect.

3) New research questions
1. What is exact meaning of a field, sport psychology and what experts in that field study?
2. The psychological factors that has an influence on sports
3. How can athletes achieve higher goal by promoting psychological state?
4. The examples of athletes who get psychological therapy and its effects.
I will research some examples and the effect of sport psychology

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler
My argument is related to Harvard Sampler, especially human mind. However, there can be a difference between mind in HS and mind in my argument. I think it does not matter. Psychology(esp. sport psychology) deals with emotion and environment as well as min in HS.

The Introduction

1. The introduction

1) Attracts the audience.

For ordinary people, sport is fairly good means to be excited and healthy. However, for athletes, they also can be excited and healthy by playing sports, but their another aim is to win the game. Winning brings satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment for ordinary people, but professional athletes earn money, honor, and so on. Therefore sport has more crucial significance to athletes.
For winning the game, athletes need performance skills and fitness like physical abilities. It is a matter of course for them to have. That is why athletes exercise and build up their bodies. However, there is another requirement to win the match. It is psychology.
Recently, athletes and coaches are interested in sport psychology, for example, there is a special psychological expert team in sports powerhouse such as Europe or North America. The special team deals with psychological problem professionally. They check out athletes' mental states and teach them how to control the mentality, consulting them(Chung chung hee, 2006). Anyway the frequency of utilization and awareness of sport psychology are getting higher. I will explain more below.

2) Explains the topic.

I will deal with sport psychology. It is a study which finds out the reason why athlete can not show real ability and why this situation occurs sometimes. Also this study researches how to minimize the adverse or bad effects of psychology and sports psychologists produce programs according to the research result and adapt to the field(김병준 Kim byeung jun, 2002). The most important thing psychologists research is to develop the psychological skills and its programs(Chung chung hee, 2006). In sports psychology, there has been many researches which suggest the relationship between mental state and athletic performance. In competitive sports, athletes' mental state has much to do with athletic performance and these mental state is not limited by psychology, but a kind of technique like exercise technique and it is called psychological skill. Ultimately, I argue that psychological skill is also essential in playing sports as mush as physical ability.

3) Declares the thesis of your argument.
My thesis is ‘Sport psychology is much more important than physical training’ To be clearer, I revise the thesis: psychology has a great impact on sports as much as physical ability. This is because fitness and strength are indispensable factors in playing sports, so is psychology.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want more examples that athletes benefit from sport psychology.

Notes:

(There are few reports and news in English that highlight the importance of sport psychology and effects. I found some Korean articles and reports and I will use it here. However, I will write an essay in English. Don't worry.)

1. Sports require high concentration in competition. Therefore, athlete's mind has an influence on one's performance ability and result.  Kim byeong hyun(62) who has consulted many players for 30 years said sport psychology is a study to help athlete to maximize their ability.

2. There are five fields in sport psychology: control, learning, development, application, exercise psychology. Sport psychology which is normally used is application psychology. It studies mental state which should be fit to show excellent performance. It helps athletes to display their ability and maintain the best psychological state.

3. Jang Hana who is a woman professional golfer said,"I was suppressed to quite the golf but after consulting with Dr.Kim byeung hyun, I learn affirmation."

4.NEST Foundation opened a class for training sports mental coach. Dr.Kim said it is necessary to employ professional psychology coach in sport team to show their real ability.

Final Thoughts:
Reinforcement psychologically is important. It is as important as physical factor.
In korea, sport psychology should be developed like in Europe and USA.

Classical argument outline

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.

I will start by explaining the definition of sport psychology. Then I will suggest several examples of successful therapies in these field. I will end with my thesis, “Psychology has a great impact on sports.”

2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.

I will suggest some articles and reports written by professors who study sport psychology. It tells the role of psychology in sport and its effects. Also, I will explain the history of sport psychology development briefly.

3. The confirmation, which lays out in a logical order (usually strongest to weakest or most obvious to most subtle) the claims that support the thesis, providing evidence for each claim.

I will start by highlighting and elaborating the examples that I mentioned in Introduction, and emphasize the importance of psychology to athletes and their performances.

4. The refutation and concession, which looks at opposing viewpoints to the writer’s claims, anticipating objections from the audience, and allowing as much of the opposing viewpoints as possible without weakening the thesis.

If there is an objections that the athelte's performance ability is much more important than psychology, I will concede that the ability is necessary factor to do well in the match. However I will emphasize my opinion, 'Psychology has a great impact on sports' because psychology is not indispensable one but it makes effective results.

5. The summation, which provides a strong conclusion, amplifying the force of the argument, and showing the readers that this solution is the best at meeting the circumstances.
I will close with a summary of my previous points, then a brief consideration of practical usage of sport psychology. The purpose of my thesis is to announce and underscore my topic, so I will end my topic with several examples like Yuna Kim and Seunghoon Lee.
